We are delighted to announce that Romas Viesulas is the winner of the inaugural Philip Weeks Sketchbook Prize 2017.
Romas will receive £500 in LARA vouchers to spend on materials or short courses. Romas’ sketchbook struck us because of his evident curiosity about the world around him and about the world of his imagination. We enjoyed that his dedication to drawing as a habit was clearly paying off: his drawings become more and more assured as you turn the sketchbook’s pages. The breadth of his subject matter was also admired.
In a touching insert to the sketchbook Romas writes, ‘My work has me travelling constantly. Now I bring my sketchbook with me, to draw fellow travellers at the airport, or find exercises for those weeks that I miss class. Occasionally, in front of an easel, I’ll refer to my notes from Luca Indraccolo’s Portrait Masterclass. He literally changed the way I see the world.’
Philip Weeks attended LARA from 2009-2010. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, who was a Royal Academician, Philip proved himself to be a very talented and promising artist.
Philip’s life was sadly cut short in 2010. As a way of remembering him, the LARA sketchbook competition has been set up in his name.
