Frequently Asked Questions

Getting to LARA Bristol

by car

Getting to The Old Library by car couldn’t be easier. Coming from London or the East the M32, which connects to the M4, is the main arterial road in and out of Bristol. Follow this road into Bristol until it turns into the A4032. Shortly after the motorway has become the A4032, there is a left turn (with its own separate lane and traffic lights) after a large shop called Staples. Take this turn. The road you have turned onto is called Houlton Street, which is straight and turns into Wade Street, and then meets a one-way road, the A420. Take the only possible option, which is a left turn, and then the next available right turn, which is the A420 feeding round to the right (straight on would take you onto the A432). Immediately after the turn you will see The Old Library on your left.

Coming from the North or West are also easiest and quickest by joining the M32 at the Hambrook Interchange (Junction 19 on the M4) and following the directions above.

The only time is it quicker to use a different route is if you are coming from the direction of Bath: In this case, coming into Bristol on the Bath road, as you see Arnos Manor and Arnos Vale park on your left, turn slightly right to carry on to St. Phillips Causeway/A4320. Stay on St. Phillips Causeway until you reach the Lawrence Hill Roundabout. At the roundabout, take the second exit, staying on the A4320 and shortly after exiting take the first left, which feeds you round onto the A432/Stapleton Road. After a short distance this road feeds your round to the left. Immediately after the left turn, look to your left and you will see The Old Library.

While The Old Library does not have its own car park The Trinity Centre, which is just around the corner (up to the end of Trinity Road and it’s on your left as you turn left), offers 12 hours of parking for £5. The one downside of the Trinity Centre carpark is that its machine does not accept cards or anything smaller than a 20p piece, so if you are planning to use it be sure to bring exact change and not including anything smaller than 20p pieces.

by public transport

LARA’s studio at The Old Library is a 15 minute walk from Bristol’s central train station – Bristol Temple Meads.

To walk to the Old Library from Temple Meads station, exit via the rear entrance and walk straight ahead, past the mini, paved roundabout on the left and then past Philpotts and Starbucks also on the left. Ahead and slightly to the right you will come to Valentines Bridge, cross it and walk to the left of Burgess Salmon, then immediately right on Avon Street and then after only a few metres turn left onto New Kingsley Road. Walk in a straight line until you meet Midland Road and then turn left. Walk down Midland Road until you meet Old Market and then turn right. Follow Old Market until the road forks. Follow the left fork (against oncoming traffic) which will take you onto Trinity Road and you will see the Old Library on the right-hand side of the road.

If you prefer to reduce the amount of walking, you can take the number eight bus from the bus stop outside the main entrance of Temple Meads Station. Get off the bus at Temple Way stop. Once off the bus you will see Old Market Roundabout in front of you. Cross the road just before the roundabout and turn right down Old Market by the Stag and Hounds pub. Follow Old Market until the road forks. Follow the left fork (against oncoming traffic) which will take you onto Trinity Road and you will see the Old Library on the right-hand side of the road.

All students at LARA Bristol will have free access to high-speed fibre broadband. The Old Library has male and female toilets, with a disabled access toilet and shower. There is a smoking area to the back of the building.
