about Portrait Painting | Paint Handling
During this five day course students will work from the live model to explore paint handling and application within portrait painting. The course will look at historical paint application techniques providing time to practice and watch detailed demonstrations by Sam Kaprielov. Taught using the sight-size method students will also leave with an appreciation of this efficient way of measuring and assessing one’s work.
the course will address:
- Handing of oil paint in alla prima painting.
- Using sight-size to capture an accurate likeness of the sitter and bringing out the best in your model.
- Assembling an appropriate palette of colour.
- Using colour and value to create a convincing impression of light.
- Technical and practical knowledge regarding pigments, painting media and canvas for creating long-lasting paintings
about sam kaprielov
Sam Kaprielov studied at Leningrad Secondary Art School – a division of the USSR Academy of Arts. He has always been a professional artist of one kind or another: commercial billboard painter; worked in art restoration; illustration; portraiture. Along with his skills of traditional visual representation Kaprielov also has a deep understanding of contemporary art trends: he regularly exhibits in contemporary art galleries in the UK and abroad.
Each class is limited to 8 students working from 2 models in sight-size. The workshop room is located within the main school of The London Atelier of Representational Art. Each model is lit with individual professional photographic lighting which provides a steady, unchanging environment from which to observe all elements of portrait painting.
