This Alla Prima Portrait Painting Masterclass taught by Teresa Oaxaca will teach you to paint a competent alla prima portrait in three days.
the course will address:
- Applying a knowledge of anatomy to a portrait
- Understanding the proportions and planes of the head
- Assembling an appropriate palette of colour and mixing accurate colour values
- Paint handling and edge control
- Controlling focus within portrait painting and overall design
- Using colour and value to create a convincing impression of light
- Technical and practical knowledge regarding pigments, painting media and canvas for creating long-lasting paintings
Each class is limited to 12 students working from 2 models. The workshop room is located within the main school of The London Atelier of Representational Art. Each model is lit with individual professional photographic lighting, which provides a steady, unchanging environment from which to observe all elements of portrait drawing.
The End Result
You will have created a carefully observed and realistic portrait from life. You will be familiar with the fundamentals of portrait painting. These are transferable skills which you will be able to apply to your personal work.

Teresa Oaxaca is an American born artist based currently in Washington D.C. She is a full time painter whose works can be seen in collections and galleries throughout the US and internationally.
Her training includes a four-year diploma at the Angel Academy of Art (Florence Italy, Graduate studies at the Florence Academy, an Apprenticeship with Odd Nerdrum in Norway, and studies at the Art League of Alexandria VA where she trained with Robert Liberace, Paul Lucchesi, and took many other courses. Currently she teaches workshops around the United States and in Europe.
In addition to her studio work she takes a variety of portrait commissions including Family Portraiture, Professional/Business, Custom and Informal arrangements. She exhibits widely and sells her work on a regular basis.
