Term used to describe an art movement that sprang up across northern Europe and America in the second half of the 19th century as a reaction to increasing industrialisation. It sought a return to the materials and ‘hand-made’ techniques of earlier times, as well as harmonising arts and crafts.  In the case of the movement’s most notable exponent William Morris, his prspective was closely linked to his socialist political outlook.
